Big Second Period Fuels Ferris State Hockey To Home Ice Victory

, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's ice hockey team reeled off four goals in the second period to earn a 5-0 victory and a series split with the Bowling Green State Falcons on Saturday (Jan. 28) night before a large crowd inside FSU's Ewigleben Ice Arena.

Junior forward Mitch Maloney and senior forward Gerald Mayhew each had a goal and an assist in the contest while freshman goaltender Justin Kapelmaster earned a 19-save shutout in net for the Bulldogs.

Ferris State freshman forward Jason Tackett opened the scoring at 2:51 of the second period when fellow freshman forward Taylor Fernandez fed a backhand pass across the goal-mouth that Tackett tapped in for a 1-0 lead. The goal was Tackett's third of the season while Fernandez earned his second assist of the year. Freshman defenseman Cameron Clarke was credited with his sixth assist of the year on the eventual game-winning goal.

Maloney found the net for his eighth goal of the season and a 2-0 Bulldog lead at 8:59 of the second period, redirecting a pass from sophomore forward Jacob Hetz past BGSU goaltender Chris Nell. Hetz earned his second assist of the year on the goal.

The Bulldogs made it 3-0 on a nearly identical play to their second goal when senior forward Chad McDonald redirected a pass right in front of the net past Nell from junior forward Andrew Dorantes for McDonald's eighth goal of the year. Dorantes was credited with his ninth assist of the year, while Maloney earned his eighth.

Mayhew struck with 29 seconds remaining in the second period for a 4-0 Bulldog advantatge, rushing the puck up the ice and dragging it past a defender before firing a shot top shelf for his 15th goal of the year. The goal was the 50th in Mayhew's college hockey career.

Freshman defenseman Joe Rutkowski earned his team-leading 14th assist of the year on Mayhew's goal.

Senior forward Jared VanWormer swatted a one-timer through the legs of Nell for his sixth goal of the year at 12:14 of the third period to account for the 5-0 score. Mayhew earned his 11th assist of the year and 60th of his career on the goal while sophomore forward Corey Mackin earned his 12th assist.

The Bulldogs outshot the Falcons 35-19 for the game with a wide 17-4 margin in the opening stanza. On the power play, the Bulldogs went 0-4 while the Falcons went 0-1 for the evening.

Chris Nell earned the loss, making 30 stops on 35 shots on goal while Kapelmaster earned his second shutout of the year in a stout team defensive effort with 19 saves.

Ferris State has a week off, but hits the road to take on the Michigan Tech Huskies on Feb. 10-11 in Houghton, Mich.
