Ferris State Hockey Opens Weekend Road Series Win Impressive Win At Michigan Tech

Houghton, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's ice hockey team earned a 3-2 road victory as the Bulldogs posted their second-straight win with a triumph over the Michigan Tech Huskies on Friday (Feb. 10) night in Houghton.

Senior forward Jared VanWormer and freshman defenseman Cameron Clarke each had two points in the winning effort while freshman goaltender Justin Kapelmaster made 39 saves in a strong outing.

Ferris State got on the board first at 2:19 of the first period when sophomore forward Corey Mackin scored his 10th goal of the year. Clarke found the buck behind the net and fished it to VanWormer, who spun and made a sharp feed across the goal-mouth for Mackin to tap in. The assists were VanWormer's 13th and Clarke's 7th of the season, respectively.

VanWormer extended the Bulldog lead to 2-0 with his seventh goal of the year at 17:51 of the first period on the power play. Senior forward Gerald Mayhew slipped the puck to VanWormer from behind the net and VanWormer rifled it from the top of the crease off the cross bar and in. Mayhew's assist with his 12th of the year and freshman defenseman Joe Rutkowski earned his team-best 15th assist of the year as well on the goal.

The Huskies cut the Bulldog lead in half at 1:03 of the second period when Alex Smith knocked a one-timer past Kapelmaster for a 2-1 score. Gavin Gould and Joel L'Esperance each tallied assists on Smith's power play goal.

Ferris State junior forward Tyler Andrew netted the game-winning goal at 18:09 of the second. Sophomore forward Jacob Hetz took a slapshot from the blue line that MTU goaltender Angus Redmond kicked out into the slot for Andrew. He then roofed the shot for a 3-1 Bulldog lead. Clarke earned his eighth assist of the year and second of the game on the goal.

Michigan Tech pulled to within 3-2 at 11:28 of the third when Mark Auk wristed a shot from between the faceoff circles past Kapelmaster. Chris Gerrie was credited with the lone assist on Auk's goal.

However, Kapelmaster and the Bulldogs hung on for the win, despite being outshot in a 16-6 by barrage of shots in the third period and 41-19 for the evening.

On the power play, Ferris State finished 1-4 with Michigan Tech going 1-6 and failing to convert on a five-on-three man advantage in the process.

Redmond took the loss for the Huskies, allowing three goals on 19 Bulldog shots.

Ferris State needs a win or a tie to take home the MacInnes Cup, which is awarded to the winner of the Winter Carnival weekend by aggregate score.

In the event that the Huskies best the Bulldogs by a single goal to even the margin of scoring, there will be a sudden death shootout to determine the winner of the MacInnes Cup, which will not impact Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) or NCAA standings.

The Bulldogs and Huskies wrap up the weekend series with a 5:07 p.m. (ET) puck drop from the MacInnes Student Ice Arena on Saturday (Feb. 11) evening.
