Ferris State Hockey Wraps Up Weekend With Road Split In Upper Peninsula

Houghton, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's ice hockey team suffered a 5-2 road loss to the Michigan Tech Huskies on Saturday (Feb. 11) night at the MacInnes Student Ice Arena. With the setback, FSU earned the weekend road split in Houghton.

Junior forward Mitch Maloney and senior forward Jared VanWormer scored for the Bulldogs, extending their career-high seasons in points and goals in the loss to the Huskies.

The Huskies took a 2-0 lead into the second period as Thomas Beretta scoed from Matt Roy and Angus Redmond at 6:10 of the first period, followed by a Reid Sturos goal at 14:59 of the opening frame from from Michael Neville and Jake Jackson.


Maloney opened the Ferris State scoring at 5:48 of the second period on the power play on a backhand shot from between the faceoff circles. Junior forward Andrew Dorantes and senior defenseman Ryan Lowney each had assists on Maloney's career-high ninth goal of the year.

MTU's Tyler Heinonen scored on the five-on-three man advantage from Shane Hanna and Mitch Reinke to make it 3-1 Huskies at 16:47 of the second period.

The Bulldogs pulled back to within 3-2 at 1:04 of the third period when VanWormer scored his career-high eighth of the season from senior forward Gerald Mayhew and sophomore forward Corey Mackin on the power play.

The Huskies later scored an empty-net goal from Chris Leibinger at 18:55 of the third and another late goal at 19:05 of the third by Reid Sturos to account for the final margin.

For the game, Ferris State was outshot 27-22 by Michigan Tech. The Bulldogs did go 2-of-6 on the man advantage with the Huskies going 1-of-4 on the night.

Ferris State freshman goaltender Justin Kapelmaster took the loss and made 22 saves while Angus Redmond made 20 for the Huskies.

The Bulldogs return to home ice inside the Ewigleben Ice Arena for their final regular-season home action next Friday and Saturday, Feb. 17-18, in Big Rapids. Both games get underway at 7:07 p.m. (ET).
