Gold Edges Crimson 4-3 In Tightly-Contested Ferris State Hockey Intrasquad Contest

 
 

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's ice hockey team played its annual Crimson and Gold intersquad contest on Saturday (Sept. 30) inside Ewigleben Ice Arena, with the Gold team winning 4-3 in a shootout.

Senior forward Mitch Maloney scored twice for the Crimson team to send the game to a shootout, but it was Taylor Fernandez scoring the winner for the Gold team in the shootout.

The Crimson squad opened the scoring at 54 seconds of the opening period when freshman forward Marshall Moise scored from sophomore defensemen Nate Kallen for a 1-0 lead.

A power play for the Gold team allowed them to even the game at 1-1, when sophomore defenseman Chris Allemon ripped a shot from between the circles. Senior forward Zach Szajner and freshman forward Lucas Finner had assists on Allemon's goal.

The Gold team scored the next two, first at 11:16 of the 1st period when senior forward Andrew Mayer gave Gold a 2-1 lead from sophomore goaltender Justin Kapelmaster and junior forward Jacob Hetz. Sophomore forward Taylor Fernandez made it 3-1 Gold at 1:45 of the second frame from junior forward Corey Mackin and redshirted transfer Oskar Andren.

The Crimson team evened the contest with back-to-back goals by Maloney, first at 2:21 of the second period from senior forward Tyler Andrew and sophomore defenseman Cameron Clarke, and next at 6:34 from redshirt sophomore forward Craig Pefley and sophomore defenseman Joe Rutkowski for a 3-3 tie.

In the shootout, Kapelmaster stopped Pefley, senior forward Andrew Dorantes, and sophomore forward Jason Tackett. Junior goaltender Darren Smith allowed the goal to Fernandez, but stopped Andren's attempt.

Ferris State opens its season at nationally #20 ranked Western Michigan on Friday (Oct. 6) at Lawson Ice Arena at 7:05 pm (EST) in Kalamazoo, Mich.
