Lone Third Period Goal Gives NMU Slim Win Over Ferris State In WCHA Opener

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's ice hockey team fell by the final score of 3-2 to the Northern Michigan Wildcats in their home Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) series' opener on Friday (Oct. 13) night inside the Ewigleben Ice Arena.

Junior forward Corey Mackin earned two assists to lead Ferris State on the night while senior forward Mitch Maloney netted his second goal in as many games.

NMU opened the scoring at 15:21 of the opening period when Adam Roeder scored from Darien Craighead and Robbie Payne for an early 1-0 Wildcat lead.

Ferris State returned fire at 4:14 of the second period on the power play as Maloney took a shot that Wildcat goaltender Atte Tolvanen made an initial save on. The shot hit the glass after Tolvanen made the stop, popped up in the air, hit Tolvanen in the back and fell in for a 1-1 score. Mackin and senior forward Drew Dorantes both earned assists on Maloney's goal.

Northern Michigan's Robbie Payne gave the Wildcats a 2-1 lead at 13:19 of the second period from Joseph Nardi on a wide open chance in front.

Junior defenseman Ryker Killins evened the game for Ferris State on the power play with a step-back move before ripping a low shot past Tolvanen for a 2-2 score at 19:25 of the second period. Mackin and freshman forward Lucas Finner each earned an assist on the goal. 

The Wildcats got the winning goal at 7:18 of the third on a two-on-one break that Troy Loggins shot past Ferris State junior goaltender Darren Smith for a 3-2 lead.

For the game, Ferris State outshot Northern Michigan 42-20. The Bulldogs were 2-of-4 on the power play, while the Wildcats went 0-of-1.

Ferris State's Smith fell to 1-1-0 in net and made 17 stops while Tolvanen improved to 2-1-0 on the strength of 40 saves.

The Bulldogs and Wildcats finish the series on Saturday (Oct. 14) night at Ewigleben Ice Arena with the puck set to drop at 7:07 p.m. (ET).
