Ferris State Battles Bemidji State To OT Deadlock In WCHA Weekend Opener On The Road

Bemidji, Minn. - The Ferris State University men's ice hockey team battled to a 2-2 tie with the Bemidji State Beavers and came away with one point in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) standings as the two squads opened a league weekend series on Friday (Oct. 27) at the Sanford Center.

Sophomore forward Taylor Fernandez earned two assists in the game for Ferris State.

The Beavers took a 1-0 lead at 13:06 of the opening period when Kyle Bauman scored his first of two goals on the night from Jay Dickman.

Ferris State junior forward Corey Mackin answered at 10:06 of the second period on a cross-ice feed from junior defenseman Ryker Killins (2) and Fernandez for Mackin's first goal of the year, which knotted the game up at a goal apiece.

BSU's Bauman gave the Beavers a 2-1 lead on a breakaway at 11:17 of the second period from Dickman and Jordan Heller.

The Bulldogs returned fire, becoming the first team to score a power play goal on the Beavers this season at 12:26 of the third when sophomore defenseman Nate Kallen wired a shot over BSU goaltender Michael Bitzer for Kallen's first of the year. 

Fernandez and Mackin each earned their second points of the night with assists on the tying goal.

The teams played through 60 minutes tied, and went scoreless in the first overtime session. Junior goaltender Darren Smith made 33 stops officially for Ferris State, while Bitzer made 17 for BSU.

Bemidji State earned the extra point by winning the sudden death shootout on a goal by Dickman.

The Bulldogs went 1-of-3 on the power play and held the Beavers 0-of-3 in that regard. The Beavers outshot the Bulldogs 35 to 19 through regulation and the first overtime.

Ferris State finishes the weekend series with Bemidji State on Saturday (Oct. 28) at the Sanford Center at 8:07 p.m. (ET).
