Ferris State Hockey Wins In Dramatic Comeback Over Michigan At Yost Ice Arena

Ann Arbor, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's ice hockey team picked up a victory at historic Yost Ice Arena as the Bulldogs downed the Michigan Wolverines 3-2 in overtime on Friday (Nov. 3) in non-conference action.

Junior defenseman Ryker Killins scored the game-winner 2:26 into overtime after the Wolverines had an overtime goal disallowed while sophomore goaltender Justin Kapelmaster backstopped the Bulldogs to victory on the strength of 42 saves.

The Wolverines opened the scoring at 2:52 of the opening period on the power play when Cooper Marody scored from Joseph Cecconi and Sam Piazza to give UM an early 1-0 lead.

However, Ferris State freshman forward Coale Norris scored his second goal of the year to tie the game at 1-1 at 8:39 of the opening frame with assists from sophomore forward Taylor Fernandez (4) and sophomore defenseman Joe Rutkowski (1).

Kapelmaster made several key stops, but the Wolverines finally cracked him a second time when Dexter Dancs scored on the power play at 7:00 of the third from Marody and Quinn Hughes, giving Michigan a 2-1 lead.

The Bulldogs, though, responded with senior forward Mitch Maloney's team-leading fifth goal of the year at 11:56 of the third from junior forward Corey Mackin (5) and senior forward Andrew Dorantes (3) to knot the game up at 2-2, forcing overtime.

Michigan's Jake Slaker ran through Kapelmaster in overtime and the puck squeaked in, triggering a premature celebration as the goal was called back for goaltender interference.

Moments later, Killins scored or the Bulldogs, his second of the year. Andrew Dorantes (4) and Mackin (6) earned assists on the goal that gave the Bulldogs the win.

Ferris State snapped a streak dating back to February 25, 2006, without a win at Yost Ice Arena with the 3-2 victory.

In goal, Kapelmaster outdueled Michigan's Hayden Lavigne, who made 20 saves on 23 shots on goal.

The Wovlerines had a 44-23 shots on goal advantage, but at even-strength the Bulldogs scored three goals while Michigan scored none. Both of Michigan's goals were of the power play variety.

The Bulldogs went 0-of-2 on the man-advantage while the Wolverines went 2-of-7 as the two in-state rivals split their non-league series in Ann Arbor.

Ferris State returns to Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) play at home this coming Friday and Saturday (Nov. 10-11) as the Bulldogs host the Alaska Nanooks inside the Ewigleben Ice Arena. Both games are set to start at 7:07 p.m. (ET).
