Ferris State Drops Weekend Finale At Northern Michigan In WCHA Play

Marquette, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's ice hockey team fell 4-2 to the Northern Michigan Wildcats on Saturday (Dec. 16) at the Berry Events Center in Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) play.

Ferris State junior forward Corey Mackin tallied a goal and an assist in the loss, all in the third period.

The Wildcats opened up a three-goal lead, scoring first when Darien Craighead scored from Zach Diamontoni on a scrum in front of the Bulldog goal at 15:45 of the first.

NMU's Troy Loggins added a shorthanded marker at 6:06 of the second period, before Craighead tallied his second of the game from Ryan Black and Phillip Beaulieu at 7:58 of the second period for a 3-0 lead.

Mackin stopped the bleeding with a shorthanded breakaway goal, his fifth of the season unassisted at 3:26 of the third period.

The Wildcats retook their three-goal lead when Craighead finished his hat-trick, from Joseph Nardi and Mitchel Slattery at 4:13 of the third on the power play.

Ferris State scored late, when senior forward Andrew Dorantes scored his fifth of the year from Mackin (12) and sophomore defenseman Nate Kallen (8) at 19:47 of the third on the power play.

The Bulldogs went 1-5 on the man-advantage, while the Wildcats went 1-9 for the night. Northern Michigan had a 35-19 edge in shots on goal.

In goal, NMU's Atte Tolvanen earned the win, making 17 saves, while FSU junior Darren Smith made 31 in the loss.

Ferris State is off for the holiday break and returns to action with an exhibition slate against the team USA National Team Development Program (U-18) on Jan. 2 at USA Hockey Arena in Plymouth starting at 7:05 pm EST.
