Ferris State Suffers Setback As WCHA Play Resumes Against #19 Bowling Green

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's ice hockey team fell 6-3 to the nationally 19th-ranked Bowling Green State Falcons at the Ewigleben Ice Arena on Saturday (Jan. 6) night in Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) action.

Freshman forward Coale Norris picked up a pair of assists while fellow freshman forward Marshall Moise netted his first collegiate goal in the contest.

The Falcons built an early 2-0 lead on goals by Tyler Spezia at 54 seconds and Connor Ford at 8:12 of the opening period, but it didn't last long.

Ferris State junior defenseman Jacob Hetz fired a shot on the rush over the shoulder of BGSU goaltender Eric Dop to cut the Falcon lead in half at 9:47 of the opening period on the power play. Junior forward Trevor Recktenwald (3) and sophomore defenseman Nate Kallen (9) picked up assists on the play.

Moise evened the contest at 2-2 alone in front of Dop on a low blocker shot off of a feed by Norris (4) at 13:25 of the first. Senior forward Mitch Maloney (5) also picked up an assist on the play.

The Bulldogs scored their third-straight goal at 19:37 of the middle frame on a five-minute major power play. Junior forward Corey Mackin made a feed to the left wing circle for senior forward Andrew Dorantes, who pushed it back in front where Mackin tapped in his sixth of the year. 

Dorantes picked up his 10th assist of the season while Norris earned his fifth of the year and second of the game.

The Falcons tied the game at 2:43 of the third when Sam Craggs scored from brother Lukas to knot the game at three goals each.

Bowling Green went on to score twice on a five-minute major power play that ended Maloney's night for FSU. Cameron Wright scored at 4:26 and 8:05 of the third to push the margin to 5-3 before Lukas Craggs capped the scoring at 9:41.

Both teams netted two power play goals, with Ferris State going 2-of-6 and Bowling Green finishing 2-of-6 with 16 power play shots.

The Falcons outshot the Bulldogs 44-26 for the contest, though Ferris State had a 13-9 advantage in the middle frame. 

Sophomore goaltender Justin Kapelmaster made 38 stops for Ferris State while Dop made 23 in the BGSU win.
