Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's ice hockey team picked up a 4-0 victory over the Lake Superior State Lakers in Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) play on Friday (Jan. 12) at Taffy Abel Arena.

Ferris State junior goaltender Darren Smith turned in a 27-save performance in a strong showing, while junior defenseman Ryker Killins picked up a goal and an assist in a return to his hometown area.

The Bulldogs scored the game-winning goal at 8:09 of the opening frame when freshman forward Coale Norris scored his fifth of the year from fellow freshman forward Marshall Moise (2) and senior forward Mitch Maloney (6) for a 1-0 lead. 

Moise and Norris played catch down the slot before Norris beat LSSU goaltender Mareks Mitens for the early lead and game-deciding goal. 

Ferris State extended its lead to 2-0 at 2:31 of the second period when junior forward Corey Mackin powered to the net and beat Mitens for his seventh of the season.

Sophomore forward Jason Tackett (2) and Killins (9) picked up assists on Mackin's goal.

The Bulldogs struck 37 seconds later when sophomore defenseman Nate Kallen scored on the rush for his fourth of the year from freshman forward Lucas Finner (6) and sophomore forward Joe Rutkowski (6), who both earned assists on the goal.

Kallen fired a pass to Finner who dropped it back to the slot for Kallen to rip past Mitens. Kallen's goal ended Mitens' night as Nick Kossoff relieved him with 16:52 to go in the second period.

Killins capped the scoring for FSU at 8:24 of the third as he wired a shot on the power play through traffic for his fifth of the year. Rutkowski earned his second assist of the night as the Bulldogs pushed the lead to 4-0 in the game.

Ferris State finished 1-4 on the man advantage while they held the Lakers 0-5 on the power play. The Laker held a 27-25 shots on goal advantage.
