Ferris State Hockey Erases Deficit On Road Before Lakers Respond To Earn Split

Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's ice hockey team erased a 3-0 deficit, but was unable to pull past the Lake Superior State Lakers on Saturday (Jan. 13) as they fell 5-3 in a Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) road contest at Taffy Abel Arena.

The Lakers built the 3-0 lead in the first. Gage Torrel and Jake Hand scored power play goals at 11:08 and 16:49 of the first, respectively, before Anthony Nellis scored at 17:13.

Ferris State junior goaltender Darren Smith was relieved, after allowing three goals on 11 shots, by sophomore Justin Kapelmaster.

In the second period, Kapelmaster had a penalty shot save before Ferris State fired in its first goal.

Junior forward Trevor Recktenwald scored his second of the season at 13:33 from sophomore Joe Rutkowski (7) to pull the Bulldogs within two.

Junior defenseman Ryker Killins then scored his sixth of the year at 3:38 of the third from freshman Lucas Finner (7) to pull the Bulldogs within one on a scrum in front of the goal.

Ferris State tied it at 4:19 of the third when sophomore forward Jason Tackett scored his first of the season from senior Mitch Maloney (7) and sophomore defenseman Cameron Clarke (3) to knot the score at 3-3 on a deflection.

Kyle Chatham gave LSSU the lead at 12:35 of the third, and Torrel added an empty netter at 19:18 for the final marker of the evening.

Ferris State was outshot 29-23 for the game and went 0-6 on the power play. The Lakers went 2-5 with the man-advantage. Goaltender Nick Kossoff made 20 saves for the victory for LSSU.

The Bulldogs are back in action as they open a four-game homestand against the Bemidji State Beavers on Friday and Saturday (Jan. 19-20) with both games starting at 7:07 p.m. (ET) inside the Ewigleben Ice Arena.
