Ferris State Drops Weekend Opener In Tightly-Contested WCHA Tilt

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's ice hockey team fell 2-0 to the Bemidji State Beavers on Friday (Jan. 19) night as the Bulldogs opened a four-game homestand inside the Ewigleben Ice Arena in Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) play.

Ferris State junior goaltender Darren Smith dazzled by making 44 stops on the night, but the Bulldogs were unable to crack Bemidji State starter Michael Bitzer.

The Beavers opened the scoring at 14:25 of the second period when Jordan Heller found a pass as the trailer on the rush and beat Smith low for a 1-0 BSU lead and the eventual game-winning goal.

Bemidji State's Brendan Harris scored from Dan Billett and Aaron Miller at 13:03 of the third period for a 2-0 lead.

Bitzer finished the night making 23 saves for a shutout win for the Beavers.

Ferris State was outshot 46-23 for the contest. Ferris State held Bemidji State 0-3 on the power play, while the Bulldogs went 0-2.

The Bulldogs wrap the season series with Bemidji State on Saturday (Jan. 20) night at the Ewigleben Ice Arena at 7:07 p.m. (ET).
