Ferris State Wins Opener Over Michigan Tech On 90's Night Inside The Ewigleben Ice Arena

Big Rapids, Mich. - A three-power play goal second period boosted the Ferris State University men's ice hockey team past the Michigan Tech Huskies on Friday (Jan. 26) night at Ewigleben Ice Arena.

Ferris State junior defenseman Ryker Killins scored twice and added an assist for a three-point night to lead the Bulldogs while junior goaltender Darren Smith made 35 stops in goal.

The Bulldogs jumped in front early at 1:17 of the opening frame when junior forward Trevor Recktenwald got behind the defense and fired a shot over the blocker of MTU goaltender Patrick Munson for a 1-0 lead.

Freshmen forwards Lucas Finner (7) and Liam MacDougall (1) picked up assists on the Recktenwald goal.

Michigan Tech evened the game at 7:32 when Greyson Reitmeier scored his third of the year from Justin Misiak and Mitch Meek as he chopped a rebound over Smith to knot the game at a goal apiece.

Killins factored in with his seventh goal of the year and first of the game at 4:42 of from sophomore defenseman Joe Rutkowski (8) and freshman forward Coale Norris (7) on a heavy slapshot from just inside the blue line on a five-on-three advantage.

Ferris State scored 14 seconds later when Norris netted his sixth goal of the year on a rush down the left wing also on the power play from Killins (10) to increase the lead to 3-1 in FSU's favor.

Munson was pulled for Devin Kero in goal for the Huskies for the remainder of the second frame.

Moments later, the Bulldogs went shorthanded as a five-on-three included a major penalty, and the Huskies capitalized twice. Gavin Gould scored at 7:46 from Joel L'Esperance and Reitmeyor, and again at 9:12 when Thomas Beretta scored from Dylan Steman and Mark Auk.

The Bulldogs got a late power play chance in the second, and Killins drove home his eighth of the season and second goal of the night for a 4-3 lead and the eventual game-winner. Sophomore defenseman Nate Kallen (10) and Finner (8) earned assists on Killins' second power play goal of the game.

Kero was removed at the end of the second period for Munson again after allowing a goal on three shots on goal in 15:04 on the ice.

Smith made 16 third-period saves as the Bulldogs hung on for the win.

Both power play units got their looks as the Huskies went 2-6 and the Bulldogs 3-5 on the man advantage.

The Huskies had a 38-18 shots on goal edge for the game. 

Ferris State is looking for the home sweep on Saturday (Jan. 27) inside the Ewigleben Ice Arena in Big Rapids at 7:07 p.m. (ET) where a sellout crowd is expected.
