Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's ice hockey team fell 3-1 to the Mercyhurst Lakers in non-conference play on Saturday (Oct. 20) night inside the Ewigleben Ice Arena as the two squads finished the weekend series with a split before a "Parents and Family Weekend" crowd of more than 2,200 fans.

Ferris State's lone goal came off the stick of junior forward Jason Tackett in the third period.

Mercyhurst had an early penalty shot stopped by Bulldog junior goaltender Justin Kapelmaster, but moments later got on the board at 5:08 when Joseph Duszak scored from Josh McDougall on a breakaway.

Then, at 14:06, a turnover at the top of the zone led to Mercyhurst's second tally of the night when Dalton Hunter scored for a 2-0 Laker lead.

At the end of the second frame, Kapelmaster left the game and was replaced by freshman goaltender Roni Salmenkangas. Kapelmaster exited having made 11 saves in the game.

In the third, Hunter added his second goal of the game, giving Mercyhurst a 3-0 lead at 10:35 from Derek Barach.

Ferris State cut the lead to 3-1 when Tackett scored from junior defenseman Nate Kallen (2) and sophomore forward Liam MacDougall (1).

For the game, Ferris State outshot Mercyhurst 27-16, with 10 shots coming on the power play. The Bulldogs went 0-7 with the man advantage, but held Mercyhurst to 0-5, and 0-10 on the weekend.

Mercyhurst's Stefano Cantali made 26 saves for the win while Kapelmaster took the loss for Ferris State. Salmenkangas made two saves in relief of Kapelmaster as the Bulldogs outshot the Lakers 12-3 in the third frame.
