Ferris State Hockey Caps WCHA Weekend Home Sweep Against Seawolves

Big Rapids, Mich. – The Ferris State University men's ice hockey team completed a weekend Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) sweep of the Alaska Anchorage Seawolves with a 3-2 victory inside Ewigleben Ice Arena on Saturday (Oct. 27) to stay atop the WCHA standings.

Ferris State junior forward Jason Tackett picked up a goal and an assist while freshman goaltender Roni Salmenkangas made 21 stops for his third straight victory to stay unbeaten in his collegiate career.

It was the Seawolves that struck first, when Jeremiah Luedtke scored at 8:17 of the first on the power play for a 1-0 UAA lead. Drake Glover and Nicolas Erb-Ekholm picked up assists on Luedtke's first of the season.

The Bulldogs responded with three straight tallies, first, at 9:55 of the opening frame when sophomore forward Liam MacDougall scored his second goal of the season and weekend on an even strength extra attacker, picking up a rebound off the pads of UAA netminder Kris Carlson. Ferris State redshirt junior Oskar Andren earned his fourth assist of the season, while junior defenseman Nate Kallen earned his fifth.

At 12:23 of the first, the Bulldogs jumped in front 2-1 when junior forward Jason Tackett scored his second goal of the season when he twisted a sliding shot backwards towards the Seawolf net while UAA's Carlson was down as it slid inside the goal post. Freshman forwards Jake Transit and Justin Michaelian each picked up their second assists of the season on the goal.

Ferris State picked up the game-winning goal at 10:26 of the third when senior defenseman Zac Tierney scored his first goal of the year for a 3-1 lead on a sliding shot that Carlson was screened on before it found the inside of the far goal post. Tackett earned the assist, winning the faceoff back to Tierney, on the goal.

The Seawolves chipped into the lead at 17:08 when Carmine Buono fired in a wrist shot off the right goal post for the 3-2 final, with Corey Renwick and Tanner Schachle earning assists.

In goal, Salmenkangas picked up a 21 save victory for Ferris State, finishing the weekend 48 of 50 on saves to shots faced for a .960 save percentage as the Tampere, Finland native earned both wins. Alaska Anchorage's Carlson took the loss, making 24 saves on 27 shots.

The special teams battle finished with the Seawolves at 1-3 on the power play, while the Bulldogs finished 0-4.

Ferris State opens a home-and-home non-conference series with the Michigan State Spartans on Friday at Munn Ice Arena in East Lansing with puck drop set for 7:00 p.m. (ET). The series finale then takes place in Big Rapids on Saturday (Nov. 3) at 7:07 p.m. (ET) and tickets can be purchased in advance with a big crowd expected at the Ewigleben Ice Arena.
