FSU Drops Opening Game Of Weekend Road Set At Minnesota State

Mankato, Minn. - The Ferris State University men's ice hockey team fell 7-1 to the Minnesota State Mavericks at the Verizon Wireless Center on Friday (Nov. 16) evening in Mankato.

Ferris State freshmen goaltender Roni Salmenkangas made 27 saves in the setback.

The Mavericks went ahead at 7:30 when Nick Rivera scored from Jared Spooner and Riese Zmolek for a 1-0 lead.

Later, at 12:52 in the first, Dallas Gerads made it 2-0 Mavericks from Charlie Gerard and Parker Tuomie on the power play. Tumoie added a goal at 15:38 for a 3-0 edge from Connor Mackey and Marc Michaelis.

In the second, the Mavericks added two more goals, the first came 40 seconds in when Michaelis tallied one from Mackey. The next at 19:22 came when Jack McNeely scored an even strength goal, assisted by Max Coatta and Reggie Lutz.

The Bulldogs got on the board in the third at 7:14 when Jacob Hetz knocked in his first goal of the season. The assists came from Cameron Clarke and Frankie Melton.

The Mavericks finished scoring in the third with two final goals to end the contest. First, at 9:47, Michaelis scored from Ian Scheid and Tuomie. The final goal came at 14:08 when Jared Spooner scored from Julian Napravnik and Mackey.

The Bulldogs had the shot advantage in the third period (9-8 FSU), but the Mavericks outshot the Bulldogs 34-18 throughout the game.

Ferris State went 0-4 with the man advantage while the Mavericks when 2-6.

The Bulldogs look to even the weekend series on Saturday (Nov. 17) back at the Verizon Center in Mankato with puck drop set for 8:07 p.m. (ET).
