Ferris State Suffers Setback In Weekend Series Finale At NMU

Marquette, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's ice hockey team fell 4-2 to the Northern Michigan Wildcats on Saturday (Dec. 15) at the Berry Events Center in Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) play.

The Wildcats scored three straight to open the game all in the first period. First at 2:36 when Griffin Loughran scored, next at 14:28 when Tony Bretzman scored, and finally at 17:44 when Adam Rockwood backhanded a breakaway try in for a 3-0 NMU lead.

The Bulldogs fought back, and cut the NMU lead to two at 2:46 of the second period when senior forward Corey Mackin scored his fifth of the year, assisted by junior forward Jason Tackett (6) for a 3-1 NMU advantage.

At 7:26, Ferris State cut the lead to one when Tackett scored his fifth of the year from freshman defenseman Cooper Zech (12) and Mackin (8) for a 3-2 score.

Northern Michigan capped the scoring at 9:00 of the middle frame when Joseph Nardi scored on the power play for the 4-2 final.

The Wildcats outshot the Bulldogs 39-25 in the contest. Ferris State freshman goaltender Roni Salmenkangas made 35 stops for the Bulldogs in the loss, while NMU goaltender Atte Tolvanen earned the win on 23 stops.

Ferris State is off for two weeks before traveling to Minneapolis to take on B1G foe Minnesota at Mariucci Ice Arena on Friday and Saturday (Dec. 28-29) at 7:00 pm EST.
