Ferris State Hockey Knocks Off Ninth-Ranked Bowling Green In Weekend Road Finale

Bowling Green, Ohio - The Ferris State University men's ice hockey team picked up a 3-0 shutout victory over the nationally #9 ranked Bowling Green State Falcons on the road at the Slater Family Ice Arena on Saturday (Jan. 26) night in Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) play.

In goal, Ferris State junior netminder Justin Kapelmaster stymied the Falcons, making 41 saves for his first shutout of the season and fourth of his career. Freshman forward Jake Transit had a goal and an assist in the game as well for the Bulldogs.

It took the Bulldogs 19:25 to take the lead as redshirt junior Craig Pefley roofed his second goal of the year past a sprawling BGSU goaltender in Eric Dop late in the initial frame. Junior forward Jason Tackett (8) and defenseman Nat Kallen (16) picked up assists on the goal as FSU took a 1-0 lead.

While Bowling Green had chances, Kapelmaster and a series of zone-clears kept the Bulldogs ahead until Transit netted his third goal of the season, finishing a drive to the goal that senior defenseman Ryker Killins put on for his second assist of the year at 4:06 of the third. Freshman defenseman Cooper Zech earned his 17th assist of the year as Ferris State took a 2-0 edge.

Then, with 1:07 remaining in the game, the Bulldogs cleared the zone and freshman forward Hunter Wendt dove and tipped in a rolling puck on the empty Falcon cage for his sixth goal of the year and the 3-0 final. Transit (6) and sophomore forward Liam MacDougall (2) earned assists on the empty net goal.

Ferris State played a disciplined game and killed the only penalty they took in the game that resulted in a power play, holding the Falcons 0-1. The Bulldogs went 0-3 on the man advantage.

Between the pipes, Kapelmaster earned his first win of the year while BGSU's Dop fell to 5-3-1, making 24 saves.

The Bulldogs return home this coming Friday (Feb. 1) as they take on the nationally 18th-ranked Lake Superior State Lakers at 7:07 p.m. (ET) inside the Ewigleben Ice Arena with the finale set for Saturday (Feb. 2).
