Third-Period Goal Lifts Ferris State Hockey To Key WCHA Road Win In Anchorage

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's ice hockey squad picked up a huge road win on Friday (Feb. 15) evening as the Bulldogs beat Alaska-Anchorage 2-1 in Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) action at Sullivan Arena in Anchorage.

Ferris State opened the two-game weekend set by picking up three points with the victory as the Bulldogs continue their push for the postseason playoffs.

In Friday night's victory, Ferris State jumped in front first in the opening period when freshman defenseman Cooper Zech scored his seventh goal of the season at 15:09 of the first frame to break a scoreless deadlock. His goal was aided by teammates Frankie Melton and Lucas Finner, who notched their seventh and fourth assists of the year, respectively.

The score stood until early in the third period when the Seawolves knotted the game back up on Tanner Schachle's second goal of the campaign off assists from Malcolm Hayes and Carmine Buono.

However, Bulldog sophomore Coale Norris found the game-winner at 12:44 of the third for his seventh goal this season. His goal was assisted by Hunter Wendt, who tallied his sixth helper of the year, along with Jake Transit. The assist was the seventh for Transit.

In net, Bulldog freshman goaltender Roni Salmenkangas picked up his seventh win this season while making 21 saves in the winning effort. UAA's Kristian Stead took the loss with 16 saves.

Alaska-Anchorage held a slim 22-18 edge in total shots, which included nine in the final period. FSU totaled six shots on goal in each of the three periods of play.

Finally, FSU went 0-of-3 on the power play for the night, but the penalty kill was perfect as the Bulldogs held Alaska-Anchorage scoreless on two tries with the man-advantage.

The two teams will square off again on Saturday (Feb. 16) night with puck drop set for 11:07 p.m. (ET). The game will be carried live on FloHockey.TV.
