Ferris State Hockey Tabs Two Seniors As Captains For 2019-20 Season

Big Rapids, Mich. – The Ferris State University men's ice hockey squad has named seniors Nate Kallen and Dominic Lutz as captains for the upcoming 2019-20 season, which will represent the 44th year of NCAA Division I Men's Ice Hockey in Big Rapids.

Kallen, a native of San Diego, Calif., will wear the captain's "C" following two-year team captain Corey Mackin in that role.

Meanwhlie, Lutz, a Livonia, Mich., native, will wear the alternate captain's "A", following in the footsteps of current professional Ryker Killins as well as Kallen last season.

"The coaching staff is very pleased to announce Nate Kallen as captain and Dominic Lutz as alternate captain for the 2019-20 Bulldog Hockey program," Head Coach Bob Daniels said. "Nate and Dominic are respected by their teammates for their hard work on the ice and in the weight room. They are also outstanding students who represent us well in the classroom and in the community. We look forward to watching them blossom as leaders and join the tradition of outstanding Bulldog Hockey Captains."

Last season, Kallen continued to improve with career-bests in most statistical categories. The defenseman finished third in team scoring with seven goals and 17 assists for 24 points and finished as a +2 on the ice with 73 shots on goal while leading the Bulldogs in power play goals with four. Kallen dressed in every game for Ferris State last season and finished with only six penalty minutes, marking the third consecutive year he's finished with eight or fewer penalty minutes.

Lutz also was a key factor for Ferris State in the second half of the season, including a dramatic two-goal and career-high three point game performance when he scored the overtime marker on the road at Alabama-Huntsville in January for a come-from-behind victory. Lutz finished with three goals and three assists for six points and took only one penalty. Lutz has sat in the box just five times in three seasons at Ferris State in 60 games.

Kallen is a senior in Business Data Analytics with a minor in finance, sporting a strong grade point average.

"It's a great honor to be chosen," Kallen said. "It's also a challenge I look forward to. There's a lot of room for improvement from last year and I'm excited to get started."

Lutz is majoring in finance with a minor in accounting, also with a high grade point average, and will be a senior in the fall.

"I'm honored and humbled to have a leadership role within this program," Lutz said. "I look forward to contributing to a successful year to the best of my ability."

Lutz and Kallen will be tasked with leading the Bulldogs into a strong 2019-20 schedule that Ferris State finalized this past weekend with the addition of one home game for 18 total contests inside the Ewigleben Ice Arena, including a pair of exhibition contests. The Bulldogs will also play 17 on the road with another two at Little Caesar's Arena in Detroit, the home of the Red Wings for the 55th Annual Great Lakes Invitational Tournament with Michigan, Michigan State, and Michigan Tech over the holiday break.
