Marquee Matchups Part Of Big Slate As Ferris State's 2019-20 Hockey Schedule Is Unveiled

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's ice hockey team officially unveiled its schedule for the 2019-20 season on Wednesday (May 8) in conjunction with the release of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) composite slate by the league office and it is filled with marquee opponents while being headlined by a trip to the 55th Annual Great Lakes Invitational in Detroit at the home of the Detroit Red Wings, Little Caesar's Arena.

The Bulldogs will play 17 home games this coming year inside the Ewigleben Ice Arena as they embark upon their 45th season of competition and look to make the NCAA tournament for the fifth time in program history and fourth in the last nine seasons.

The 2019-20 schedule features at least five of the six in-state Division I opponents with a chance to face all six dependent on results in the Great Lakes Invitational. Ferris State will take on in-state foe Western Michigan for the fifth consecutive season in a home-and-home series, traveling to Kalamazoo's Lawson Ice Arena on Friday, Nov. 8, before returning to Big Rapids on Saturday, Nov. 9, to duel with the Broncos.

Ferris State's 17-game home schedule includes a pair of exhibition contests as the Bulldogs take on Waterloo (Canada) on Sunday, Oct. 6, and then drop the puck against the highly-respected USA National Team Development Program (NTDP) Under-18 team for the third-straight year on Wednesday, Oct. 9. The USA NTDP Under-18 team, which will make its second consecutive trip to Big Rapids, is under the direction of Ferris State Hockey alum Seth Appert.

The Bulldogs will take on former conference rival Miami (Ohio) on the road to open the regular season Oct. 18-19 in the first meeting between the two teams since Nov. 3, 2012. FSU has not traveled to Oxford to take on the Miami Redhawks since Nov. 14, 2009.

Ferris State returns home for its regular-season home opener and first WCHA action versus the Northern Michigan Wildcats on Oct. 25-26 before hitting the road to battle the Lake Superior State Lakers on Nov. 1-2.

After the rivalry series with Western Michigan, the Bulldogs battle Bemidji State on Nov. 15-16 before hauling off to Alaska for two weeks to take on the Alaska Nanooks on Nov. 22-23 and the Seawolves of Alaska Anchorage on Nov. 29-30.

Upon returning from Alaska, the Bulldogs get a weekend off before entertaining the Alabama-Huntsville Chargers on Dec. 13-14 in Big Rapids to wrap up the first half of the season.

Following another off weekend, the Bulldogs will travel for the second time in program history to the Great Lakes Invitational in Detroit at the home of the Detroit Red Wings and FSU's first-ever action inside Little Caesar's Arena. The 55th installment of college hockey's premier tournament is slated for Dec. 30-31. Ferris State will join the fray against the University of Michigan, Michigan State University, and Michigan Technological University in a battle for the first MacInnes Cup in school history.

After the GLI, the Bulldogs immediately head back to work to take on the Bemidji State Beavers in conference play on Jan. 3-4 in Minnesota before returning home for a four-game homestand.

The Bulldogs face-off with reigning conference champion Minnesota State on Jan. 10-11 before hosting the Alaska Nanooks on Jan. 17-18.

Following the homestand, the Bulldogs have back-to-back Upper Peninsula trips to take on Michigan Tech on Jan. 24-25 and Northern Michigan on Jan. 31-Feb. 1.

Ferris State then hosts Michigan Tech on Feb. 14-15 following an off weekend and hits the road for a date with the Bowling Green Falcons on Feb. 21-22.

The Bulldogs wrap up the regular season at home against Lake Superior State on Feb. 28-29 with the Bulldogs going to work on Leap Day for the first time since 2008.

The top four teams again following league regular-season action will host the opening round of the WCHA Playoffs March 6-8 with the winner of each best-of-three series advancing to the league semifinals. The semifinals will be a best-of-three series on campus sites March 13-15 with the two remaining teams squaring off for the WCHA's Jeff Sauer Trophy in a single game on Saturday, March 21, at the highest seed.

The NCAA Tournament opens play on March 26-28 with regional sites in Albany (NY) for the East Regional, Worcester (Mass.) for the Northeast Regional along with Allentown (Pa.) for the Midwest Regional and Loveland (Colo.) for the West Regional.

The 2020 Frozen Four is set to take place at Little Caesar's Arena in Detroit on April 9-11.

Since 2012, the Bulldogs have made three NCAA Tournament appearances and advanced to the NCAA Final Eight all three times. FSU has also won two conference regular-season championships along with capturing the WCHA's Broadmoor Trophy once as the league's Final Five Champion. Along with a Frozen Four berth and national title game showing in 2012, FSU also has reached the regional final and the final eight of the NCAA Tournament in both 2014 and 2016.
