Bulldogs Erase Early Deficit But Fall To Wildcats Late

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's ice hockey team battled back from a 4-1 deficit but fell 6-4 to the Northern Michigan Wildcats in Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) play in front of a sold out crowd on Saturday (Oct. 26) at Ewigleben Ice Arena.

Ferris State junior forward Marshall Moise scored twice while redshirt senior forward Oskar Andren added a pair of assists in the game. 

The Wildcats scored twice early, at 42 seconds of the first when Mitchel Slattery tallied, followed by Adam Roeder at 8:44 for a quick 2-0 NMU lead.

Later, at 16:36 of the first, Ferris State senior defenseman and captain Nate Kallen scored his third goal of the weekend and season to cut the NMU lead to 2-1 from Andren (1) on a shot to the top right corner in four-on-four play.

Northern Michigan replied with a pair of goals at 17:50 (Griffin Loughran) and 18:25 (Vincent De Mey) to take a 4-1 lead.

Ferris State scored the next three to even the contest.

The Bulldogs cut the lead to two goals when senior forward Jason Tackett fired a shot from the goal line at the bottom of the right wing circle on a sharp angle for his first goal of the season at 7:31 of the second period on a shorthanded goal. Andren picked up his second assist of the game and season on the play, while freshman defenseman Connor Fedorek picked up his first collegiate point, an assist, on the play.

A few minutes later, at 11:26, Tackett's shot off the cross bar rebounded into open ice and Moise pounded it home for his second goal of the year from Tackett (3), and freshman defenseman Jake Willets (2) on the power play.

Late in the third, Moise found his third of the season in front of the goal at 17:24 of the final frame to even the game at 4-4. Willets (3) and Tackett (4) picked up the assists on Moise's second goal of the game.

The Wildcats scored twice late, when Griffin Loughran scored at 18:34 on a breakaway, and again at 19:18 into the open goal. 

Ferris State outshot Northern Michigan 43-27 and went 2-6 on the power play. Ferris State also held Northern Michigan 0-7 on the man advantage.

Ferris State freshman goaltender Carter McPhail made 18 saves and allowed one goal in relief of sophomore Roni Salmenkangas in goal who made three stops in the first period.

For the Wildcats, Nolan Kent made 39 saves in the win for the Wildcats.

Ferris State heads next to Lake Superior State University to take on the Lakers in WCHA play on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 1-2. Puck drop for Friday's contest is set for 7:07 pm ET.
