Ferris State Falls To Nationally Ranked #3 Minnesota State At Home

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's ice hockey team fell 5-1 to the nationally #3-ranked Minnesota State Mavericks on Saturday (Jan. 11) at the Ewigleben Ice Arena in Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) play. 

The Mavericks jumped in front on the power play at 8:12 of the first period when Charlie Gerard finished in close. 

Later, at 14:42, Lucas Sowder extended the lead to 2-0, wrapping a backhand past Ferris State goaltender Carter McPhail.

In the second period, Gerard tallied again for the Mavericks at 14:53 on the power play for a 3-0 MSU lead.

Late in the period, Ferris State cashed in when senior defenseman Cameron Clarke scored his first goal of the year, picking up his own rebound to beat Minnesota State goaltender Dryden McKay inside the left goal post. Junior forward Liam MacDougall added his ninth assist of the year on the play to cut MSU's lead to 3-1.

However, only 21 seconds later, Jack McNeely scored to make it 4-1 Minnesota State to finish the second period.

In the third, Reggie Lutz hit on a one-timer at 6:41 to account for the final 5-1 margin.

The Mavericks scored three power play goals in seven attempts while Ferris State finished 1-4 with the man advantage.

Ferris State freshman goaltender Carter McPhail made 37 stops in goal while Minnesota State's Dryden McKay made 25 stops in the win for the Mavericks.
