Bulldogs Best Huskies In Road Victory At Michigan Tech

Houghton, Mich. - For the second straight night, sophomore goaltender Roni Salmenkangas dazzled in goal for Ferris State, as the Bulldogs picked up a 2-1 road victory over the Michigan Tech Huskies in Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) play on Saturday (Jan. 25) at the MacInnes Student Ice Arena.

In goal, Salmenkangas made 29 saves on 30 shots, including a post-to-post highlight reel save to keep the Bulldogs in the game in the third period.

Ferris State scored first at 5:30 when sophomore forward Hunter Wendt picked up a 120-foot stretch pass from redshirt senior defenseman Zach Yoder and broke in on MTU goaltender Matt Jurusik. Wendt beat Jurusik low for a 1-0 Bulldog lead and his second goal of the year. Yoder (6) and Willets (17) picked up assists on Wendt's goal.

Michigan Tech tied the game at 7:53 of the third period when Tommy Parrottino scored on a rush down the right wing wall to even the contest at 1-1.

Late in regulation, junior forward Liam MacDougall rushed end-to-end and put the puck through the legs of a Husky defenseman before getting a shot away that Jurusik steered straight up in the air. The puck landed on the tape of sophomore forward Justin Michaelian, who punched it between Jurusik's legs, giving FSU a 2-1 edge.

Michaelian scored his sixth goal of the season on the play. MacDougall (11) and senior defenseman Nate Kallen (9) earned assists on Michaelian's game-winning goal.

Down the stretch, Salmenkangas shut the door to keep the Bulldogs in front as he earned the victory. For the weekend, Salmenkangas made 57 stops on 60 shots for a .950 save percentage, his best weekend of the year.

Michigan Tech outshot Ferris State 30-24, though the Bulldogs had an 11-10 advantage after the first. Ferris State also took just three penalties and killed off all of them, including a major penalty at the end of the second period. The Bulldogs finished 0-1 on the power play.

Ferris State is back on the road in the Upper Peninsula next week (Jan. 31-Feb. 1) as the Bulldogs take on the Northern Michigan Wildcats at the Berry Events Center in Marquette in WCHA play. Puck drop for Friday night is set for 7:07 pm ET.
