Ferris State Hockey To Re-Air Dramatic 2014 WCHA Semifinal Victory

Big Rapids, Mich. - Ferris State men's ice hockey will be re-airing the 2014 Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) Semifinal against the Alaska Anchorage Seawolves on Thursday, May 21, at 7:07 p.m. (ET) online.

 

The game will be a free stream for fans via youtube (@ferrisathletics) and the contest will also be "live" tweeted from @FerrisHockey.

 

The Bulldogs, then a 27-win team, won in a dramatic comeback that required overtime on the night that spawned the hashtag #Gerrytime. The hashtag was in honor of Gerald Mayhew, who scored his second goal of the game in overtime to send the Bulldogs to the WCHA Championship game inside Van Andel Arena, the home of the American Hockey League's (AHL) Grand Rapids Griffins.

 

Prior to the re-air, Ferris State Hockey radio play-by-play broadcaster Harrison Watt will be joined by men's ice hockey head Coach Bob Daniels as well as Bulldog Hockey alums Andy Huff, Gerald Mayhew, Cory Kane and Justin DeMartino for a Zoom Interview that will be aired on Wednesday, May 20, at 7 p.m. (ET) on social media to remember the historic 2013-14 season and preview the re-aired game.

 

This past week, Mayhew was named the Willie Marshall Award winner for leading the American Hockey League (AHL) in goal-scoring with 39 in just 49 AHL games for the Iowa Wild. Mayhew also spent time in the National Hockey League (NHL) with the Minnesota Wild this season, scoring twice. 

 

The prodigious goal-scoring pace that Mayhew set in the AHL completely overmatched the rest of the league. Mayhew's 49 games played were the least of any goal scorer in the AHL's top seven goal-scorers. Mayhew's pace of 0.79 goals per game far eclipsed second place goal-scoring finisher Reid Boucher (Utica Comets), who had 34 goals in 53 games for a rate of 0.64 goals per game.

 

During the 2013-14 season, Kane erupted for 21 points in his final 16 games of the season. Kane, an all-decade team selection, cemented his status with the voters with a stretch rivaled by few in the nation as a senior. Kane's unit of Mayhew and Huff was one of the hottest in the nation heading into the 2013-14 postseason.

 

Then a senior, forward Andy Huff continued to pile up big-game moments in the 2014 Semifinal. Huff finished tied for second in team point-scoring during the 2013-14 season with a career-best 25. DeMartino, a former volunteer assistant coach for Ferris State, has since carved out a coaching role in the North American Hockey League (NAHL).
