Bulldogs Fall In League Opener to #7 Bowling Green

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's ice hockey team fell 6-1 to the nationally #7 ranked Bowling Green Falcons on Saturday (Jan. 2) afternoon inside the Ewigleben Ice Arena in Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) play.

Ferris State junior forward Ethan Stewart scored his team leading third goal of the season in the contest as the Bulldogs gave the Falcons all they could handle until BGSU seized control in the third.

Bowling Green got off to an early lead when Brandon Kruse scored as a puck popped loose in front of the Bulldog goal at 17:30 of the first, giving the Falcons a 1-0 lead.

Ferris State evened the score at 3:05 of the second frame when junior forward Ethan Stewart finished off a chance in front on the power play for his team-leading third goal of the year. Senior forward Liam MacDougall earned his fourth assist of the year while freshman forward Mitch Deelstra picked up his first collegiate assist on the play.

The Falcons regained the lead at 10:47 of the second period when Cameron Wright scored from a sharp angle below the left face-off circle for a 2-1 BGSU lead.

BGSU scored four times in the third period - first at 8:00 when Sam Craggs tallied on a deflection on the power play. Seth Fyten followed up at 9:21 while Ford picked up a goal at 10:36 of the final frame. Wright scored his second of the game for the 6-1 final.

Ferris State had a 36-31 advantage in shots on goal for the day, including a 31-20 advantage through 40 minutes of play.

On the man advantage, Ferris State went 1-5 while the Falcons scored twice on five attempts.

Ferris State junior goaltender Ron Salmenkangas made 25 saves for the Bulldogs while Eric Dop made 35 for the Falcons in the game.

Ferris State looks for the split on Sunday (Jan. 3) at 3:07 p.m. (ET) in the series finale at the Ewigleben Ice Arena.
