Bulldogs Topple National #2 Minnesota State

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's ice hockey team scored a big Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) victory over the nation's #2 ranked Minnesota State Mavericks by a 2-1 final on Friday (Nov. 5) inside the Ewigleben Ice Arena. 

Ferris State freshman forward Bradley Marek scored twice while sophomore goaltender Logan Stein stood tall, making 31 saves in the win for the Bulldogs.

After a scoreless first, Marek broke the seal at 51 seconds of the second period, finishing a two-on-one one-timer for his fourth goal of the season and a 1-0 Bulldog lead. Senior forward Liam MacDougall (6) and junior defenseman Blake Evennou (3) picked up the helpers on the play.

With just two seconds remaining on a Ferris State power play, Marek doubled the lead, deflecting in his fifth goal of the season at 8:12 of the middle frame. Senior defenseman Brendon Michaelian picked up his third assist of the season, taking the shot from the left circle that Marek deflected. Sophomore forward Mitch Deelstra dealt his first helper of the year on the play as well.

Just over three minutes later, Minnesota State forward Nathan Smith split the defense and scored on the power play at 11:24 for what was the game's final goal to cut Ferris State's lead in half.

In the third period, the Bulldogs outshot the Mavericks 15-11 to run out the clock and pick up their first win against a top-five ranked team of the campaign in the process. It's the second time in as many games the Bulldogs defeated a team at least receiving votes in the USCHO poll.

In goal, Stein picked up a 31-save win, allowing just one goal for the Bulldogs. Dryden McKay took the loss allowing two goals on 30 shots.

Ferris State finished 1-3 on the man advantage while Minnesota State went 1-4 on the night.

The Bulldogs (2-1-0-0 CCHA) look for their first sweep in the new CCHA on Saturday (Nov. 6) inside Ewigleben Ice Arena at 6:07 p.m. (ET).
