Big Rapids, Mich. - In a high-paced game in front of a sold out crowd at the Ewigleben Ice Arena, the Ferris State University men's ice hockey team fell 4-3 to the Michigan State Spartans Saturday (Nov. 13) in non-conference action.
Ferris State sophomore defenseman Drew Cooper picked up a pair of points in the contest for the Dawgs.
The Dawgs jumped in front at 6:15 of the first period when Cooper ripped a one-timer past MSU goaltender Drew DeRidder on the power play for a 1-0 Bulldog lead. Senior forward Liam MacDougall (7) and sophomore defenseman Sam Skinner (2) picked up the helpers on the goal.
In the second period, Ferris State freshman forward Bradley Marek fired a shot for the top right corner on a man advantage for a 2-0 lead and his team-leading fifth goal of the year at 6:48 of the second period. Cooper (1) and MacDougall (8) had the assists on Marek's goal.
Less than a minute later, Ferris State senior forward Justin Michaelian stripped MSU defenseman Dennis Cesana at center ice and streaked in, firing in a shorthanded goal for his second tally of the year and a 3-0 Bulldog lead at 7:36 of the second frame.
The Spartans responded on the power play at 18:39 when Josh Nodler scored to cut the Bulldog lead to 3-1.
In the third period, Cole Krygier's power play goal at 13:42 cut Ferris State's lead to 3-2. The Spartans followed it up at 17:08 when Dennis Cesana scored to even the game up at 3-3.
Finally, with 21.3 seconds remaining, Erik Middendorf scored the eventual game-winner for Michigan State to give them a 4-3 lead.
Ferris State had two strong opportunities to tie the game in the closing seconds, but could not beat DeRidder and fell in the game. On the man advantage, Ferris State had a strong night, going 2-5. Michigan State finished 1-5.
The Spartans finished with a narrow 34-33 edge in shots on goal. In goal, Ferris State sophomore goaltender Logan Stein took the loss, but had a strong performance on 30 stops on the night. DeRidder picked up the win for Michigan State, making 30 stops of his own.
