Dawg Explode For Five-Goal Period in 6-3 Road Win At Bowling Green

Bowling Green, Ohio - A five-goal second frame, including three in 48.2 seconds boosted the Ferris State University men's ice hockey team to a 6-3 win over the (RV) Bowling Green Falcons Friday (Dec. 10) at the Slater Family Ice Arena in Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) play. 

Ferris State senior forward Justin Michaelian scored twice while junior defenseman Brenden Rons and sophomore defenseman Sam Skinner each added two points.

The Falcons jumped in front, finishing a two-on-one at 13:41 when Anton Malmstrom punched it over the goal line for a 1-0 lead.

Ferris State replied with a pair of goals to open the second period. Senior forward Marshall Moise ripped a one-timer inside the left goal post at 1:12 of the middle frame to tie the game at 1-1 on his fifth goal of the year. Freshman forward Nick Nardecchia (2) and sophomore forward Stepan Pokorny (8) picked up the assists on the play.

Later, at 10:18 of the second period, Rons cashed in for Ferris State, toe-dragging a puck past a diving Falcon defenseman before firing it top left corner for his fourth goal of the year and a 2-1 Bulldog lead. Sophomore defenseman Ben Schultheis (1) and freshman forward Zach Faremouth (2) assisted on the goal.

Bowling Green scored their final two goals of the night on power plays. Alex Barber scored at 11:41 and 16:27 to give the Falcons a 3-2 lead, which lasted less than three minutes.

Soon after, at 19:09.1, Ferris State began their mad-dash of three-goals in 48 seconds when sophomore forward Stepan Pokorny launched a shot inside the right goal post to tie the game at 3-3 on the power play. Junior defenseman Blake Evennou (4) and sophomore defenseman Drew Cooper (5) earned the helpers on the goal.

19 seconds later, Ferris State junior forward Brenden MacLaren ripped a one-timer that BGSU goaltender Zack Rose stopped. The rebound lay at the right goal post where Justin Michaelian buried it top right corner for his fifth goal of the campaign. MacLaren (1) and Skinner (5) were credited with assists on the eventual game-winning goal and a 4-3 lead. 

With 1.8 seconds remaining in the period, a rebounded chance landed at the right side of the goal. Ferris State sophomore forward Jacob Dirks picked the puck up behind the back and fired the puck off the backside of Rose and banked it into the open the goal for a 5-3 Bulldog lead. It was Dirks' first goal of the year. Skinner (6) and senior defenseman Brendon Michaelian (5) earned the assists on the Dirks goal.

The Falcons turned to Christian Stoever in goal for the third period, and pulled the netminder for the extra attacker in the last 4:35 of regulation.

Ferris State extended their 5-3 lead to the 6-3 final when Rons fired the puck the length of the ice for what looked like an icing with Bowling Green's net empty. Justin Michaelian won the icing race and the puck rebounded off the end wall onto Michaelian's tape where he buried his sixth goal of the year at 17:10 of the third period. Rons earned his second assist of the year on the goal.

In goal, Ferris State junior goaltender Logan Stein made 30 stops for the win. Rose made 19 stops before being lifted and took the loss. Stoever made 11 stops in relief for Bowling Green.

Ferris State went 1-3 on the power play on the night while Bowling Green finished 2-5.

Ferris State goes for the sweep on the road when they go back to work Saturday (Dec. 11) at 7:07 p.m. (ET) inside the Slater Family Ice Arena.
