Bulldog Hockey Suffers 4-0 Setback Against Bemidji In Mason Cup Quarterfinals Game 2

Bemidji, Minn. – The Ferris State University men's ice hockey team had its season ended by Bemidji State in game two of the CCHA Mason Cup Quarterfinals on Saturday (March 9) night.

The Beavers (19-15-2) won the best-of-three series in two games, topping the Bulldogs (10-24-2) 5-4 in overtime Friday and then 4-0 on Saturday. Mattias Sholl had a 25-save shutout in the final win, while FSU goaltender Logan Stein made 35 saves.

After a scoreless first period, Bemidji State scored three times in the second period. First, at 3:50, Carter Jones scored from the right wing to put the Beavers on the board. Adam Flammang and Jere Vaisanen assisted.

Eric Pohlkamp scored the next two goals, both on the power play. In the second period, at 15:24, he scored his third goal of the series with Kyle Looft and Jackson Jutting assisting. He then scored another power play goal at 19:09, giving the Beavers a 3-0 lead before the third period. Lofft and Lleyton Roed had the helpers.

Bemidji scored for the final time at 3:35 in the third period. Donte Lawson fired a pass from behind the net to Jake McLean in the slot. He buried the chance and gave the Beavers a 4-0 win.

For the game, Ferris State had 25 shots on goal, failed to convert its lone power play chance, went 0-2 on the penalty kill and won 33 faceoffs. The Beavers had 39 shots on goal, killed their only penalty, were a perfect 2-2 on power play tries and won 26 faceoffs.

Pohlkamp and Looft each had multiple points for the Beavers. Andrew Noel blocked four shots, Travis Shoudy had three blocks and each of Nick Hale, Nico DeVita and Luigi Benincasa had two blocks for the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs concluded their 2023-24 season at 10-24-2 overall. Antonio Venuto led the team with 26 points while Shoudy led the squad in assists (17). As a rookie, Benincasa had the second-most points (22). Stein and Noah Giesbrecht each recorded five wins as netminders for the Dawgs.
