Ferris State Hockey’s Luigi Benincasa Named to CCHA All-Rookie Team

Big Rapids, Mich. – Ferris State University hockey freshman Luigi Benincasa has been named to the Central Collegiate Hockey Association's (CCHA) All-Rookie Team following a strong freshman season with the Bulldogs in 2023-24.

The CCHA's All-Rookie Team is comprised of six different student athletes (three forwards, two defensemen, one goaltender). This year, six teams were represented on the All-Rookie Team.

Joining Benincasa on the CCHA All-Rookie Team are Michigan Tech forward Isaac Gordon (18-18-36), Minnesota State defenseman Evan Murr (6-21-27), Bemidji State Defenseman Eric Pohlkamp (10-13-23) Lake Superior State forward John Herrington (9-11-20) and Bowling Green State goaltender Cole Moore (2.87 goals against average, .918 saves percentage). Benincasa finished fourth among rookies in total points (22) and assists (16) while ending the year with .70 points per game.

Among Bulldog skaters, Benincasa finished second on the team with 22 points, trailing only Antonio Venuto (26). He also led the team with 18 points in conference play and 12 assists against CCHA opponents. His 16 assists were second-most on the team (Travis Shoudy, 17) and six goals were fifth-best. The Edmonton, Alberta native was one of three Bulldog skaters to finish the season with an on-ice mark of better than even. His +2 rating was third on the team, and he also won the third most faceoffs of any Bulldog (164).

Benincasa finished the season with six multi-point performances, including a season-high three-point game (1-2-3) during the Bulldogs' 5-3 win against Bemidji State Jan. 6. With six points (2-4-6) across six Jan. outings, Benincasa earned CCHA Rookie of the Month Honors. He was a three-time CCHA Rookie of the Week as well (Nov. 20, Dec. 4, Jan. 8).

In 33 games played, Benincasa recorded 16 blocked shots and fired 64 shots on target, sixth most of any Bulldog.

Benincasa and the Bulldogs concluded their season with a CCHA Mason Cup Quarterfinals series loss against Bemidji State and will now turn their attention to the 2024-25 season.
