FSU Splits Two Matches At GLIAC Tourney
Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's tennis team split a pair of matches in opening day play on Saturday (April 17) at the 2010 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Tournament in Midland, Mich.
The second-seeded Bulldogs topped number seven seed Tiffin (Ohio) by a 5-0 count in round one before suffering a 5-2 setback to third-seeded Wayne State in Saturday evening's semifinal round at the Midland Community Tennis Center.
With the split, the Bulldogs will now face number five seed Grand Valley State in Sunday's (April 18) third-place match starting at 9:30 a.m. (ET).
FSU swept the doubles round in match number one against the Dragons and took the first two completed singles flights in advancing to the semifinals.
However, WSU took a 2-1 edge following doubles play and managed to win three of the first four completed singles positions in defeating FSU during the evening semifinals.
The Wayne State victory avenged an earlier 5-4 regular-season setback to the Bulldogs only last Sunday (April 11) in Big Rapids. WSU will face top-seeded and nationally 15th-ranked Northwood in Sunday morning's title match.
FSU dropped to 11-7 overall this season following the Saturday
split. The Bulldogs are currently ranked 38th nationally in
the latest Campbell's Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA)
Division II National Rankings along with fourth in the Midwest
Region.
