FSU Men's Tennis Drops Regional Match

Midland, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's tennis team dropped a 5-1 decision to Southern Indiana in the opening round of the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional Tournament on Thursday (May 6) afternoon at the Gerstacker Tennis Center in Midland.

The Screaming Eagles of the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) swept the doubles round and then won two of the first three completed singles flights in earning the win.

With the triumph, Southern Indiana will now advance into Friday's (May 7) regional final against host Northwood.

The Bulldogs, who were ranked sixth in the region, conclude the 2009-10 campaign with an 11-8 overall mark under third-year head coach Alex Palladino.  USI improved to 20-4 overall with the triumph.

FSU's lone victory in the match came from freshman Tyler Marengo at the number six singles flight with a 6-2, 7-5 victory versus Nathan Lattimer.

The Screaming Eagles opened the match winning all three doubles flights, including two by identical 8-5 scores.  Those wins were posted by the number two pairing of Ben Boesing and Juan Quiroz over FSU's Jack Swan and Justin Hermes along with the third tandem of Robert Neiters and Ben Hamm, who beat the Bulldogs' Ahmet Demir and Arin Enge.

USI's other doubles victory came at the first flight from the nation's 21st-ranked team of Joe Boesing and Diego Gimenez.  They defeated Ferris State's Kyle Revall and Steven Roberts 9-7.

In singles play, Joe Boesing of USI topped Swan 6-3, 6-1 at the third flight while Quiroz beat Demir by retirement at the second spot.

The Bulldogs were making their 13th consecutive and 16th overall NCAA-II Regional Tournament appearance.
