Men's Tennis Competes In ITA Regionals

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's tennis team kicked off its 2010-11 season by sending selected competitors to the United States Tennis Association (USTA)/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Midwest Regional Championships in Indianapolis, Ind.

The annual event was hosted by the University of Indianapolis from Friday to Sunday (Sept. 24-26).

In singles play, Bulldog senior Steven Roberts (San Jose, Calif./Del Mar) reached the quarterfinal round in the 64-player draw before falling to eventual runner-up Antoine Pangaud of Northwood by a 6-2, 6-2 count.  Roberts posted a 3-1 overall record in the tournament.

Bulldog senior Kyle Revall (West Lafayette, Ind./Mattawan), who was seeded fifth overall in the field, posted an 0-2 mark in singles competition with an opening-round setback followed by a consolation loss.

JUniors Justin Hermes (Colorado Springs, Colo./Cheyenne Mountain) and Jack Swan (Milwaukee, Wis./Arrowhead) also dropped their first round matches and fell into the consolation bracket.  Hermes eventually won two matches before bowing out in the consolation quarterfinals while Swan concluded the weekend with an 0-2 record.

Second-seeded Andy Blair of Drury (Mo.) was the eventual singles champion in the field.

Swan and Hermes teamed up to win their first match of the doubles draw before dropping an 8-4 contest in the second round versus Northwood's Pangaud and Valentin Bayle.

Meanwhile, Revall and Roberts claimed both of their first two doubles matches prior to suffering a narrow 8-6 loss to the runner-up team of Diego Gimenez and Joe Boesing of Southern Indiana in the quarterfinals.  Victor Klintcharov and John Lazenby of Rockhurst (Mo.) emerged victorious in the doubles field.

The regional championships annually include the top singles and doubles competitors from across the region with the winners earning berths into the ITA National Small College Championships held each October.

The Bulldogs are tentatively slated to begin dual action in the spring with a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) home match against Lake Superior State on March 18 at the FSU Racquet and Fitness Center in Big Rapids.
