Men's Tennis Moves Into GLIAC Semifinals With Opening-Round Win

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's tennis team made quick work of Tiffin in the opening round of the 2013 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Tournament on Friday (April 19) at the Midland Community Tennis Center in Midland, Mich.

The Bulldogs, who are the league's defending tournament champion and seeded third overall, will now advance into Saturday's (April 20) semifinals to face second-seeded Wayne State.

Ferris State bolted out to a 3-0 lead against the sixth-seeded Dragons by winning the three doubles contests in decisive fashion.  FSU won flight one 8-5 and posted an 8-2 win in the second doubles match along with an 8-6 triumph at third doubles.

Then, in singles competition, FSU's Laurent Galarneau was a 6-1, 6-1 winner at the number one flight and Aaron Dial recorded a 6-3, 6-3 victory at fifth doubles to help clinch the victory for the Bulldogs.

Ferris State improved to 15-4 overall this season under first-year head coach Chad Berryhill with the win while TU fell to 18-9 overall with the setback.  Overall, the Bulldogs have now won eight of their last 10 outings.

All eight teams involved in the GLIAC Tournament will play three matches each over the course of the three-day event. The second-round matches will take place on Saturday starting at 3:45 p.m. (ET).  The third and final round will take place on Sunday beginning at 8:30 a.m. (ET).

A year ago, Ferris State claimed its first GLIAC Tournament Championship since 1999 with a stunning 5-4 triumph over Northwood in the title match.  FSU previously finished as the runner-up to Northwood seven consecutive seasons from 2000-06 and then placed fifth in 2006-07, fourth in 2007-08 and were third overall in 2008-09 before also finishing third in 2010-11.

In addition to being ranked 34th nationally, the Bulldogs are also currently ranked second in the ITA Midwest Regional Rankings.
