Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's and women's tennis teams both upset nationally-ranked opponents on Thursday (March 12) as the Bulldog teams wrapped up their annual spring break trek to the Sunshine State by sweeping Florida Southern.
The Bulldog men's squad posted a decisive 7-2 triumph over #32 Florida Southern while the women's squad pulled out a 6-3 victory over the nation's 45th-ranked team.
In the men's match, Ferris State earned the sweep in doubles and picked up wins in four of the six singles flights. Florida Southern's lone wins came at three and six singles. FSU's victories included a three-set triumph at the number one flight.
Meanwhile, in the women's contest, the Bulldogs grabbed a 2-1 lead following the doubles round before taking four of the six singles positions as well. Florida Southern managed to win at first and third singles, but FSU took straight-set wins at the bottom three flights along with a three-set victory at the second spot in the lineup.
The Ferris State women's team improved to 17-8 overall this year with the win and wrapped up the spring trip to Florida by winning four of five matches.
On the men's side, the Bulldogs moved to 7-4 this season and finished the trip to the Sunshine State by winning three of five contests overall.
The Bulldog women next return to play on the road with a non-league match at Davenport on March 31 in Grand Rapids. Match time is set for 6 p.m. (ET). The men's team will take on NCAA Division I Western Michigan next Wednesday (March 18) with match time set for 1 p.m. (ET) in Kalamazoo. The Bulldogs then resume Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play on March 21 at home against Findlay.
