Ferris State Wins Exciting Showdown Of Ranked Rivals Against GVSU

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's tennis team pulled out an exciting 6-3 victory over West Michigan rival Grand Valley State in a late night showdown between two regionally and nationally-ranked squads on Wednesday (March 23) evening at the FSU Racquet and Fitness Center in Big Rapids.

The Bulldogs, ranked 36th in the nation, pulled out three-set wins at three different singles flights to beat the 37th-ranked Lakers. The two rivals also entered the match among the top three teams in the Midwest Region with FSU second and GVSU third.

Ferris State jumped out to a 2-1 lead following doubles play as the Bulldogs took wins at the first and third spots in the lineup.

In singles play, each of the top four flights went to a third set. The Bulldogs received thrilling three-set wins from Vasil Surduk at the number one flight and Till von Winning and second singles with GVSU taking the third and fourth flights to pull within 4-3 overall in the team score.

However, the Bulldogs closed the match by taking the fifth and sixth flights with Daniil Tarantinov winning in straight-sets at the fifth spot and Simon Levy pulling out yet another three-set victory at six singles.

With the win, Ferris State improved to 12-3 overall and stayed perfect at 3-0 in the GLIAC this season. GVSU fell to 8-5 overall and 2-1 in league action.

Ferris State is back in action this weekend as FSU travels to Indianapolis to face Missouri-St. Louis and the University of Indianapolis in non-league regional action.
