Ferris State Men's Tennis Captures Share Of Second-Straight GLIAC Championship

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's tennis team captured at least a share of a second-straight Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championship as the Bulldogs beat Walsh 8-1 on Saturday (April 23) to open a weekend homestand at the FSU Racquet and Fitness Center in Big Rapids.

The win lifted FSU to 18-4 overall and 8-0 in the GLIAC heading into Sunday's (April 24) regular-season finale against Tiffin, which has only a single loss in conference play heading into a Saturday tilt with fellow one-loss league foe Grand Valley State.

A year ago, Ferris State won its first league regular-season championship since 1999 and first outright crown since 1994. With Saturday's share, the men's tennis squad became the fifth FSU team to win a conference title this season, joining football, volleyball, men's basketball and hockey teams.

Prior to last year, Northwood had won the last 20 regular-season crowns in a row dating back to 1995, including a share of the title with FSU in 1999. Either Northwood or Ferris State have won the GLIAC Championship every year since 1982. The two schools shared the crown in 1982 before FSU had a 12-year run as the outright champion prior to the NU stretch.

Nationally 36th-ranked Ferris State made quick work of Walsh on Saturday as the Bulldogs took a 2-1 lead following doubles play with wins at the first and third flights.

In singles competition, the Bulldogs swept all six flights, which included a pair of three-set triumphs at the second and fifth spots in the lineup.

Walsh fell to 11-10 overall and 4-3 in conference action with the setback.

Sunday's match between FSU and Tiffin will get underway at 10 a.m. (ET). FSU can capture the league's outright regular-season championship for the second consecutive campaign with a victory.
