Ferris State Men's Tennis Pulls Out Victory To Advance To GLIAC Semifinals

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's tennis squad advanced to the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Tournament Semifinals with a hard-fought 4-3 win over Ashland in quarterfinal-round action on Friday night at the Greater Midland Tennis Center.

With the win, the three-time defending champion Bulldogs will now advance to face second-seeded rival Grand Valley State in Saturday's semifinals starting at 3:45 p.m. (ET) in Midland.

"It was a crazy intense match, but we pulled it out," said FSU Interim head coach Mark Doren. "Major credit goest to Ashland for playing outstanding tennis tonight."

The Eagles took the second and third doubles flights to pick up the opening point by winning two of the three positions.

However, the third-seeded Bulldogs rallied in singles play and claimed four of the six flights to knock off sixth-seeded Ashland.

Ferris State got straight-set singles wins from senior Steward Sell at the number one flight along with Pablo Munoz Baroja at three singles and Ayush Deswal at the five spot. The key victory for the Bulldogs came at the fourth flight where Mathis Guerre beat Jordan Phelps 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (8-6) to lift FSU to the win.

In the other quarterfinal match, fourth-seeded Northwood topped fifth-seeded Lake Superior State 4-0 and the Timberwolves will next face top-seeded Wayne State in the other semifinal on Saturday.

The championship and third-place matches are set for Sunday (April 28) at 9 a.m. (ET).
