Ferris State Tennis Squads Post Strong Results In Season-Opening Action

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's and women's tennis teams got their 2021-22 season underway this past weekend as both squads competed in the Davenport Invitational held in the Grand Rapids area.

The West Michigan event included student-athletes from both Davenport and Grand Valley State along with Ferris State.

Overall, the Bulldogs compiled an 8-1 overall record at the top three doubles flights in men's action while going 13-3 in the top six singles spots on the men's side. FSU's Yannic Alexander Mader won the top flight.

In the women's competition, Ferris State posted a perfect 7-0 record in top three doubles competition and finished with a 7-5 mark in the top six singles spots despite holding two players out of the lineup due to injuries in addition to a couple missed matches over the course of the weekend.

"We had an outstanding first weekend of action," said FSU head coach Mark Doren, who led the Bulldogs to a sweep of both the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) men's and women's regular season and tournament championships last year. "I was extremely proud of how both teams played and competed.

"We put this invitational together so we could be prepared for the upcoming ITA Regional Championships," he aded. "As the weekend progressed, we made adjustments for injury prevention and both teams continued their dominance in doubles play. Overall, it was a great start to the year."

The Bulldog women's team will next compete in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Midwest Regional Championships slated for Sept. 18-20 in Indianapolis. The men's ITA regional will take place the following week, Sept. 24-26, in Allendale.
