Bulldog Men's Tennis Falls In Tightly-Contested GLIAC Semifinal Match

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's tennis squad suffered a close 4-3 setback to rival Grand Valley State in the semifinal round of the 2022 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Tournament on Saturday (April 30) at the Midland Tennis Center in Midland, Mich.

The Bulldogs fell behind early as GVSU claimed the first two completed doubles flights for the initial point of the match, winning 6-2 at two doubles and 6-0 at the third flight.

FSU, which was seeded second overall in the tournament, fought back in singles action and had an opportunity to claim the win, but ultimately spit the six singles positions as the third-seeded Lakers held on for the win to avenge a regular-season setback to the Bulldogs.

Ferris State got singles wins from Benjamin Lortie at the fourth flight and Josh McDermott at the fifth spot in straight-sets to go with a three-set triumph from Jan Koupil at the third position.

However, the Lakers claimed the top two singles flights in straight-sets and captured a tightly-contested three-set victory in the sixth flight to advance to the tournament championship match on Sunday.

The Bulldogs fell to 15-4 overall this year with the setback and will now await the official NCAA Division II Tournament selection announcement. FSU was ranked third in the most recent NCAA D2 Midwest Regional Rankings. The selections will be announced via a live online stream on Tuesday (May 3) at 8 p.m. (ET) at NCAA.com.
