Ferris State Tennis Teams Take Two From Purdue Northwest In GLIAC Road Sweep

Big Rapids, Mich. - Both the Ferris State University men's and women's tennis squads stayed perfect in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play following the opening weekend of league competition as the Bulldogs swept Purdue Northwest on the road Saturday (March 23) in Indiana.

The Bulldog women pulled out a 5-2 win while the men put together another impressive performance in a 7-0 shutout over the Pride.

The Ferris State women's team claimed decisive wins in all three doubles flights to secure the first point of the match before coming back in singles play to win four of the six spots in the lineup. Two of FSU's singles wins came in three-set fashion.

"On the women's side, we lost to Purdue Northwest last year so it felt good to get back on the winning side," said FSU head coach Mark Doren. "Morgan Waller has already been playing great tennis, but today she beat one of the top players in the Midwest. Also, in just her second match back, Sophie Daavettila won her singles match 6-0, 6-0 against a solid player."

In the men's match, Ferris State secured wins at the first and third doubles positions to take the opening point of the contest and then swept all six singles flights for the win, moving to 10-4 overall on the year. Five of the six singles positions were determined in straight-sets.

"On the men's side, I'm so happy with our play today," Doren said. "This is the most competitive PNW team they've had in awhile and they've had some big wins this year. So, for us to not drop a match was a huge success."

The Bulldog men's team has now won its last five matches in a row this season while the women have captured a win in three-straight outings to date.

Ferris State will host Southwest Baptist (Mo.) in a regional non-conference matchup on Wednesday, March 27, at 10 a.m. (ET) for both the men and women in Big Rapids. FSU then plays host to Grand Valley State in league action on Saturday (March 30) beginning at 10 a.m. (ET) for the women and 2 p.m. (ET) for the men.
