Bulldog Track & Field Runs In Back-To-Back Last Chance Meets During Weekend Competition

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's and women's track and field squads took part in a pair of last chance competitions this past weekend at Grand Valley State University as the Bulldogs attempted to improve upon or garner additional national-qualifying performances in Allendale, Mich.

A limited number of Bulldog student-athletes competed in Friday's (May 9) GVSU Second To Last Chance meet on the Lakers' campus with additional competitors in action Saturday (May 10) at the GVSU Last Chance meet.

On Friday, senior Zoey Hohmann won the 400 meters for the Bulldog women's squad in a time of 57.25 while teammate Shea Van Klompenberg came in secodn overall (57.73) in the race. Briana Raasio took second in the javelin (130-4) and 16th place in the discus (91-7).

Ferris State's David Silversmith placed fourth overall in the men's 5,000 meters (15:05.99) with Lucas Copi coming in sixth (15:13.41) and Brandon Cushman finishing 13th (15:32.04) in the same field. Logan Hammer placed 17th in the 1,500 meters (4:08.81).

Lucas Johnson also competed and wound up fourth overall in the hammer throw (177-7) while recording a Division II provisional mark.

Then, on Sautrday, FSU's Johnson competed again and came in eighth overall in the hammer throw (177-3) while topping the Division II national provisional qualifying standard again during the Last Chance event.

Meanwhile, the Bulldogs' Alyssa Osika placed third overall in the women's 800 meters (2:14.67) on Saturday with Breeann Ovokaitys coming in eighth overall in the 1,500 meters (4:42.11). Raasio also competed for the second day in a row and took third place in the javelin (123-8) and 14th place in the discus (136-3).

The Bulldogs have several athletes who have provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships, which will be held May 23-24 in Allendale at GVSU. The list of national meet competitors will be announced early this coming week.
