Ferris State Track & Field Notches Three National-Qualifying Times At GLIAC Indoor Championships

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's and women's indoor track and field teams wrapped up action in the 2015 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championships on Sunday (March 1) in University Center, Mich.

The Bulldogs placed 11th overall with 12 points on the women's side in the two-day conference indoor meet held at the new Saginaw Valley State University Fieldhouse while the men's team totaled five points in finishing 13th overall.

Overall, Ferris State had three NCAA-qualifying performances in the league championships.

Ferris State senior Samantha Johnson earned fourth place in the women's mile run while again surpassing the national provisional qualification standard with a time of 4:54.30 in the race. Fellow senior Breeann Ovokaitys came in seventh in the same race at 4:59.55 as she also provisionally qualified for the NCAA meet in a highly-competitive field.

FSU's women's distance medley relay team also topped the provisional-qualifying standard as the quartet of Johnson, Ovokaitys, Ashley Hamilton and Samantha Humphrey placed fourth in the conference with a showing of 11:49.30.

Hamilton narrowly missed placing in the 800 meters as she finished ninth overall (2:15.81).

On the men's side, sprinter Damonta Madden placed fifth in the 200 meters as he was clocked in 22.07 during the final round. He narrowly missed reaching the finals in the 60 meters as he posted the ninth-fastest preliminary time at 6.99 on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Ferris State's men's distance medley relay tandem of Logan Hammer, Ben Lentz, Max Hodges and Spencer Gerber also picked up points at the league championships as they placed eighth overall with a clocking of 10:18.74 in the race.

The official announcement of the participants for the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships will be made this coming week. The national meet is set for March 13-14 at the Birmingham CrossPlex in Birmingham, Ala.

Following the NCAA Indoor Championships, the Bulldogs are slated to open the outdoor season on March 27-28 at the Grand Rapids Open.
