Ferris State Track & Field Opens Indoor Campaign At GVSU Early Bird Event

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's and women's indoor track and field squads officially opened their 2017-18 season on Friday (Dec. 1) night as the Bulldogs took part in the Grand Valley State Early Bird event in Allendale.

Ferris State's Cody Stilwell won the men's weight throw (68-4.50) with Ross Miller taking second place (58-9.25) and Brett Allpow finishing eighth (52-8.75). Stilwell set a new school record and hit the NCAA Division II national provisional qualifying mark while Miller also hit the NCAA-qualifying standard.

FSU's Jon Cok placed fourth in the high jump (6-6.75).

The Bulldogs' Lucas Harris placed seventh in the 400 meters (51.29) with a personal-best while Nate Meyer was 14th in the same event (54.78).

FSU's Christian Hector came in ninth in the 600 meters (1:30.01).

Meanwhile, senior Trevor Holowaty finished 15th in the 5,000 meters (14:41.98) with Damien Halverson taking 25th place (15:12.10). Holowaty ran an indoor personal record and also hit the NCAA D2 provisional-qualifying standard with Halverson topping his lifetime personal-best.

The Bulldogs' Kathryn Etelamaki took 14th place in the 5,000 meters (17:26.12) on the women's side and also reached the NCAA Division II provisional qualifying standard while bettering her personal best by 12 seconds.

FSU's Sarah Utchel came in 13th in the 200 meters (26.41) while Nicole Snyder was 14th in the 400 meters (1:05.51).

The Bulldogs will return to action on Jan. 12 at the Saginaw Valley State Classic in University Center, Mich.
