Ferris State Track & Field Has Big Weekend At GVSU Big Meet

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's and women's indoor track and field squads took part in one of the nation's largest indoor events this past weekend as FSU competed in the Grand Valley State "Big Meet" held over two different days at the Kelly Family Sports Center in Allendale.

The weekend featured two different days of action with two seperate meets taking place, both dubbed as part of "Big Meet" weekend.

On Friday, FSU sophomore Kathryn Etelamaki placed 16th in the 5,000 meter run invite in a time of 17:13.77, which topped the NCAA Division II National Provisional qualifying standard. She came back on Saturday to clock 10:07.69 while finishing sixth overall in the 3,000 meter open race.

On Saturday, FSU's Sarah Utchel also came in seventh in the 60 meters (7.98) while senior Natalie Perry took 11th place in the mile run (5:11.12)

FSU was also 12th in the women's 4x400-meter relay (4:18.48) featuring a tandem of Nicole Snyder, Kylie Hutchinson, Katelyn Hutchinson and Carissa Schurr.

On the men's side, the Bulldogs' Stanley Williams won the long jump (6.98m) on Saturday.

Bulldog senior Jon Cok earned runner-up honors in the high jump (2.05m) while surpassing the NCAA qualifying mark once again. Meanwhile, Ross Miller carded a fourth-place finish in the weight throw (17.42m) with teammate Brett Allpow finishing seventh (16.75m).

Senior Trevor Holowaty came in fourth overall in Saturday's 3,000-meter open (8:38.76) with teammate Damien Halverson placing 18th (8:58.17) in the same race.

Several other FSU competitors also had personal-bests in the two events, which attracted athletes from all levels.

The Bulldogs are back in action on Friday (Feb. 16) at the GVSU Open in Allendale. The meet is a final tune-up prior to the 2018 GLIAC Indoor Championships slated to be hosted by the Lakers on Feb. 24-25.
