Ferris State Posts Two National-Qualifying Marks With Nine Top-Eight Finishes At GLIAC Championships

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's and women's indoor track and field squads had nine top eight finishes in the 2018 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championships held on Saturday and Sunday (Feb. 24-25) at the Kelly Family Sports Center in Allendale.

The competition featured nearly 500 student-athletes from 10 women's teams and eight men's programs in one of the most highly anticipated NCAA Division II meets throughout the country.

Overall, the Ferris State men's squad tallied 16 points in finishing seventh overall while the women netted eight points in a ninth-place team finish.

Ferris State junior Cody Stilwell took third place in the men's weight throw while topping the NCAA Division II national qualification mark with a toss of 65-11.75.

Meanwhile, senior Jon Cok placed third in the high jump with a performance of 6-10.25, which also was a provisional national-qualifying leap.

The Bulldogs' Trevor Holowaty came in eighth overall in the 3,000 meters (8:30.48) and Stanley Williams finished eighth in the long jump (22-10).

FSU's Damien Halverson narrowly missed placing in the top eight as he took ninth place in the men's 5,000 meters (15:40.20).

The men's distance medley relay quartet of Ethan Israels, Christian Hector, Dylan Hearns and Mark Jacobs finished seventh overall (10:50.12). Israels is a sophomore while the other three are all freshmen in the FSU program.

On the women's side, Bulldog sophomore Kathryn Etelamaki took seventh place in the 5,000 meters (17:43.33) and was eighth in the 3,000 meters (10:15.02). FSU's Carissa Schurr placed seventh in the 800 meters (2:16.30).

The Bulldogs' women's distance medley relay team of Sydney Dawes, Salix Sampson, Katelyn Hutchinson and Kylie Hutchinson also captured sixth place overall in a time of 12:47.80. The quartet included three freshmen along with a sophomore in Sampson.

Official qualifiers for the 2018 NCAA Division II National Indoor Championships will be announced this coming week.
