Another Strong Weekend For Ferris State Indoor Track Squads

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's and women's indoor track and field squads had another strong weekend of action as the Bulldogs took part in the Grand Valley State Big Meet on Friday and Saturday (Feb. 8-9) in Allendale.

The weekend included two seperate meets featuring some of the nation's top collegiate competition.

On Friday night, Bulldog senior thrower Cody Stilwell set a NCAA provisional qualification mark with a big throw of 19.60 meters in placing fifth overall in an invite-only field.

Also on Friday night, Bulldog senior distance runner Damien Halverson set a new personal record in the men's 5,000 with a time of 15:07.39.

The Bulldogs' Stanley Williams placed sixth in the long jump (6.65m) on Saturday. Meanwhile, Ferris State freshman Ben Menapace took 24th overall in the 200 meters (23.23) while Halverson came in 27th in the men's mile run (4:27.04).

FSU's distance medley relay team of Zach Mckenzie, Menapace, Ethan Israels and Halverson finished 19th overall (10:46.92).

Bulldog junior Katie Etelamaki placed third overall of 77 runners in the women's 3,000 meters on Saturday as she was clocked in 9:59.29 and narrowly missed the Division II National Provisional qualification mark.

In the women's 800 meters, FSU's Carissa Schurr placed 15th in a highly-competitive field in a time of 2:19.90 with junior Jennifer Eaton right behind her in 16th place (2:20.47).

FSU's Amanda Esinger tied for 12th in the high jump (1.54m) with Brianna Copley taking 13th place in the shot put (12.54m).

FSU was also 14th in the women's 4x400-meter relay as the team of Sheridan Brittney, Hannah Todd, Schurr and Eaton were timed in 4:16.30. A second grouping of Taylor Thrush, Sydney Dawes, Paige Deitering and Katelyn Hutchinson finished 16th in the same race (4:18.97).

The Bulldogs will head back to GVSU on Friday, Feb. 15, for the annual GVSU Tune-Up meet. The 2019 GLIAC Indoor Championships will then take place on Feb. 23-24 in University Center, Mich.
