Ferris Softball Downs Ashland To Garner Doubleheader Split

The Ferris State University softball team produced all of its runs in one inning which was enough for the Bulldogs to record a 3-1 triumph over the Ashland Eagles Sunday (April 18) in game two of a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) twinbill at the FSU Varsity Softball Field in Big Rapids, Mich.

Ferris State's win improved the Bulldogs' overall record to 18-13 and 9-6 in conference action to date this season.  Ashland dropped to 26-10 overall and 15-5 as a result of the second-game setback.

Sophomore third baseman Makenzi Peterson (Big Rapids) tallied one of the Bulldogs' four base hits in the contest with a run-scoring single to center field in the third to score senior second baseman Amanda Harrington (St. Joseph/Stevensville-Lakeshore) with the game's first run.  Harrington started the inning off with a single through the right side of the Ashland infield.  Ferris State added to its 1-0 lead two batters after Peterson when sophomore first baseman Chelsea Morris (Jenison) took a pitch by Ashland starter Logan Hursey up the middle for a two RBI single.

Senior pitcher Kayle Stevenson (Holland/West Ottawa) held Ashland scoreless for the first six innings before the Eagles tallied their first run in their last at bat with a two-out two-base hit.  Stevenson (8-6), who allowed five hits and walked two batters in the seven innings, was successful in getting leadoff hitter Erica Miller to fly out to deep center field as senior outfielder Rachel Wade (Canton) caught the ball to conclude the nightcap.

Accounting for the four FSU hits with one apiece were Rachel Wade, Makenzi Peterson, Chelsea Morris, and Amanda HarringtonMorris also extended her current hitting streak to six straight.

Ferris State will venture to Michigan's Upper Peninsula this Monday (April 19) for a pair of league outings against the Lake Superior State Lakers at LSSU's Kaunisto Field in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.  Game one gets underway at 3 p.m. (EDT) with the second game to follow around 5 p.m. (EDT).
