Ferris State Powers Past Lake Superior State, 9-0

The Ferris State University softball team registered 13 base hits and scored six times in the first inning to post a 9-0 win over Lake Superior State this Monday (April 19) afternoon in a six-inning game-one affair at LSSU's Kaunisto Field in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.

The opening decision in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) doubleheader improved Ferris State's record to 19-13 overall and 10-6 in the conference.

Freshman pitcher Dana Bowler (Lockport, Ill.) threw a three-hit shutout as she struck out a season-high 11 LSSU batters while walking just one in six innings of work.  Bowler (6-7) received plenty of run support, especially in the first inning as the Bulldogs scored six times.

Senior designated player Rhea Flores (Dearborn Heights/Southgate Anderson) knocked in the contest's initial run on a RBI fielder's choice.  An LSSU error resulted in the second Ferris run which allowed freshman outfielder Morgan Kramerich (Crest Hill, Ill./Lockport) to score.  Junior catcher Rachel Mueller (Santa Clarita, Calif./Valencia) would follow up with a two-RBI double as the Bulldogs took a 4-0 lead.  The last two runs in the opening frame where scored as a result of another Lakers' error and a single by senior second baseman Amanda Harrington (St. Joseph/Stevensville-Lakeshore).

In the fourth, Ferris State pushed its advantage to 7-0 as the Bulldogs reeled off three straight singles after the first out was recorded.  Sophomore outfielder Stephanie Dusendang (Comstock Park/Rockford) and sophomore third baseman Makenzi Peterson (Big Rapids) both singled.  An RBI single by Rhea Flores plated Dusendang from second base.

The Bulldogs would score twice more in the top of the sixth inning on three hits.  Freshman catcher Liz Hamming (Hudsonville), who had a team-high tying two hits in the contest, belted a double to score two FSU runners.     

Ferris State accumulated 13 hits against LSSU pitcher Jillian Willette (4-10) as Hamming and Stephanie Dusendang's two hits apiece lead the way.  Hamming along with Rhea Flores and Rachel Mueller each generated two RBIs in the run-rule victory.
